Why are there no women in the LCS?

I wrote this article some time ago on Linkedin — but on Friday I posted a video to follow up on our intentions to help women in Pro Gaming! Check it out here.

At Microsoft Ventures I was the biggest proponent for women in tech, encouraging entrepreneurs to hire diverse and ensure parents put their daughters and sons in STEM schools whenever possible.

I love the gaming industry, there are women throughout the industry doing amazing things, from engineering, game design, environmental and character something really missing.design, and executive leadership roles. However, in professional gaming, there’s

*Why are there no women in the LCS? *

I’m not picking on the LCS, but because they’re the biggest and most watched I want to focus on them for now. I know women who have worked and who are currently working at Riot, I promise you it’s not a Riot thing. I’m sure Riot would be more than happy to have women in the LCS.

In regular sports you typically have women vs women and men vs men. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see men and women compete against each other on an even playing field, and I believe eSports is one of the best places where this can happen quickly — I also know it would be super competitive.

In the past some people made suggestions that “all girl” teams in eSports have been considered “gimmicky”; you find some girls, you put them on a team, you PR them around. Then there’s the argument that “some sports are for men”, like Football. So football answers back with one of the worst examples in regular sports “The Lingerie Football League” — the name itself is an embarrassment to all women.

I don’t want to do that, I don’t want to do any of that. It’s just not the right way to promote “diversity”. It’s certainly not a good way to promote women in tech either. So let’s put the debate aside, and find one professional gamer, a woman, who can compete on the the LCS.

We are in a position where we can make a difference. I know for a fact there are good girl players out there, my daughter is an amazing League of Legends player. She taught me how to play, she grew up playing games and I started her on Age of Empires at a very young age. She might not be pro worthy, but if growing up she knew there was an opportunity here she might have gone down that path!

So I’m going to make a public call here. Unikrn will sponsor any professional LCS team with a woman on it. I will do whatever we can to help promote and connect that team with other brands that I currently work with and have worked with in the past. That’s my personal commitment. This isn’t a gimmick, this is an effort to make a difference in a space that I can control.

I’m serious about this. Help me make this happen, this is a call to the community; Follow me on Twitter, share this article, and let’s make a difference and start a movement. BTW I also posted this article on my LinkedIn.
